The role

As Naval Architect - Weight Control and Hydrostatics at Damen Naval you will join a design team during the proposal phase and control the design during the engineering and production phase. You will work on general ship design calculations, including weight and hydrostatic properties. To this end, as Naval Architect - Weight Control and Hydrostatics you will use several ship design software packages, including PIAS stability software. This job will include the execution of inclining tests and you will be in contact with clients, class, subcontractors, and building yards.

Key accountabilities

As Naval Architect - Weight Control and Hydrostatics you will:

  • Control and analyse the ship hydrostatics and weight, including centre of gravity and the damage stability of a newbuilt vessel.
  • Report on the weight balance including margin strategy and coordinate and control the stability boundaries.
  • Responsible for the stability booklet, including class approval.
  • Advise the proposal engineer or design control team lead on the weight balance status, hydrostatics, and prospects.
  • Coordinate and control the weight budgets of the various engineering teams.
  • Advice the design engineers on tank arrangement, watertight arrangement, and stability.
  • Advice work preparation engineers on block lifting, transport, and floating issues.
  • Develop and manage semi-automated processes for weight data collection and hydrostatic reports, for further analysis of the ship systems and its subsystems
  • Implement and maintain processes to ensure data quality.
  • Advice on the ship design during conceptual design regarding subsystem weight estimates and margins.
  • Execute onboard weight surveys and inclining tests, for validation of the ship weight, including centre of gravity.

Skills & experience

As Naval Architect - Weight Control and Hydrostatics you will need to have:

  • Bachelor degree preferably in Naval Architecture and candidates with a relevant secondary vocational education (MBO-4+) degree and relevant experience are also invited to apply.
  • General ship design knowledge and practical experience in hydrostatic and lightship weight calculations.
  • Good knowledge of English and preferably Dutch, both verbally and in writing.
  • Competencies: accurate, critical, persuasive, creative, team player, decisive and structured.
  • Excellent antecedents as a pre-employment security screening are a standard part of the recruitment procedure.
  • Permanent multiyear EU citizenship combined with permanent EU work visa are all requirements of the recruitment process for viable candidates, given the military nature of clients and projects.
