About us

Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding (DSNS), established in Vlissingen has a rich tradition of naval shipbuilding with its original navy roots stemming back more than 140 years. At that time the Royal Schelde shipyard, based in Vlissingen in the Netherlands, was known worldwide for its quality shipbuilding, both in the naval and commercial sector.

For more than 50 years DSNS has in fact been the dedicated shipbuilder of the Royal Netherlands Navy and we have worked alongside the Royal Netherlands Navy on the design, engineering and construction of eight generations of combatants, as well as amphibious vessels and naval auxiliaries. Based on decades of experience Damen now offers navies worldwide a broad range of defence and security vessels, ranging from 7 m to more than 200 m.

The role

Provides overall leadership for the Project department. The project department is responsible for manufacturing engineering, job preparation, planning and building strategy and supports these topics in the project execution.

Key accountabilities

  • Provides overall manufacturing (Int.) national capacity scenarios, based on signed contracts and promising proposals.
  • Provide technical support to development and execution of building strategies and manufacturing logistics.
  • Provide timely and accurate project manufacturing and engineering (planning & capacity) related services and advises.
  • Analyse and plan work force utilization, space requirements, work flow and design layout of equipment / work space for maximum efficiency & quality of manufacturing processes.
  • Provide technical support to the (project) organization and make recommendations to enhance effectiveness of productivity & quality and participate in cost reduction & quality improvement programs.
  • Analyse and isolate manufacturing errors or delays and develop and implement permanent solutions.
  • Drive & monitor improvement processes for yard & manufacturing, focus on quality and delivery performance to assure continuous improvement for the project and yard organization.
  • Develop and determine feasibility and techniques for manufacturing of new ships, including equipment & tooling and new technology and equipment for process control and cost reduction.
  • Execute (Int.) national) yard assessments for DSNS & the Damen group.
  • Manage the resource planning; to assure that all project teams can be manned with a suitable team with the required capabilities.
  • Attract, lead, coach, appraise and develop (the cooperation between) employees, manage the employee lifecycle, ensure staffing.
  • Ensure that the operating objectives and standards (including HSSEQ and AQAP) of performance are understood and owned by employees.

Skills & experience

  • Bachelor degree in Naval Architecture or other relevant technical study at Bachelor level.
  • An understanding of financial management and wider management principles and techniques.
  • Experience in hands-on leading, managing and directing a project department in the (Naval) shipbuilding or related industry.
  • Extensive experience in the manufacturing of complex (naval) ships.
  • Experience working in complex project environments.
  • Good command of the Dutch & English language (written & verbal), the German language is an asset.
  • Ability to frequently travel long distances and work abroad.
